THE IMPORTANCE OF SEO FOR STARTUPS AND EARLY STAGE BUSINESSES

As a career Product Manager that’s predominantly worked with startup and early-stage businesses, an element of any startup’s go-to-market strategy invariably includes looking at SEO and whether it is a necessary component for a launch (and if there is budget for such activities). In my experience, unless the business model of the business is highly dependent on organic search traffic as a acquisition channel, more often of or not, SEO is put on the back burner and not prioritized. Which in my opinion is a mistake. Let’s look at why:

SEO BUILDS CREDIBILITY

Implementing a solid SEO strategy builds trust and domain authority, which provides a solid foundation for not only your business’s brand, but also helps build trust with your customers. Authority with search engines such as Google takes time and a consistent approach to SEO, so considering SEO during the design phase of your business website and then implementing a SEO strategy as part of your launch, is critical to beginning to build credibility for your brand.

SEO IS A COST EFFECTIVE CHANNEL

When compared to other (paid) customer acquisition channels, SEO on the whole is an efficient and cost effective way to not only drive more customers to your business, but also build brand credibility and trust with your audience. It is also one of the few customer acquisition channels that actually gets cheaper the longer your work at it.

GOOD SEO RESULTS IN BETTER CUSTOMER UX

Implementing a great SEO strategy for your business which includes keeping up to date with the ever-changing landscape of what search engines like Google consider to be good SEO, improves the overall customer experience of your business website and ultimately customer satisfaction of interacting with your brand.

SEO IS A LONG TERM STRATEGY

Like it or not, SEO is a long term, slow burn strategy that takes a consistent and steady approach over a long period of time to really see the gains and benefits. With this in mind, implementing a solid SEO strategy for your business as soon as you launch is critical to beginning the journey to benefiting from SEO.

IT’S MEASURABLE

As a Product Manager often responsible for the revenue stream and bottom line of a business, implementing an acquisition strategy that is entirely measurable is a huge advantage of what SEO brings to the table. With properly implemented tracking and analytics, ROI for SEO is easily measured, allowing you to test and iterate on approaches to get the best out of your investment in SEO.
